Faith is a living, bold trust in God's grace, so certain of God's favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. Such confidence and knowledge of God's grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to God and all creatures. The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith. Because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the God who has shown you such grace. - Martin Luther

ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission - applications due 2/15!

This is copied from the ELCA YAGM website:

Young Adults in Global Mission

The ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission program invites ELCA young adults ages 21-29 into a transformative, year-long journey in international service. As they offer themselves in service, ELCA young adults are shaped by the witness of our global neighbors. They share in the journeys of companion churches and organizations in one of nine countries around the world.
A year of service through the Young Adults in Global Mission program invites young adults to become the hands and feet of Jesus in the world, providing critical support to ministries and projects in communities of need. It also invites volunteers into a journey of self-reflection, providing space to consider their sense of identity, God’s work in the world, and their place within it all.
Young adults serve in the spirit of accompaniment, walking alongside global companions in a manner that practices mutuality, interdependence and solidarity. Areas of service include, but are not limited to, health and development, congregational ministry, human rights, education, homelessness, addiction recovery, women’s issues and children and youth. All site placements provide opportunities for young adults to confront issues of wealth and poverty, racial privilege, economic disparity and globalization, all through the lens of faith.
Candidates for Young Adults in Global Mission apply to the program at-large rather than to a specific country. Applicant preferences are taken into account but the final decision about where volunteers serve is made by Global Mission staff and YAGM country coordinators in mid-April. Current YAGM country programs include: Argentina/Uruguay, Cambodia, Central Europe (Hungary), Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mexico, Rwanda, Southern Africa and United Kingdom
Applications for the program open on December 1, and are due Feb. 15 each year, for service beginning that same August.
We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world – together. Come, imagine yourself in the world!

Day of Service

Tomorrow, September 13th, is God's work. Our hands. Day of Service. Everyone who worships with CtK tomorrow morning (worship is at 10:00am and will include an opportunity to hear from the youth who went to Detroit for the ELCA Youth Gathering this summer) will be invited to stick around to help assemble school kits for Lutheran World Relief or decorate cookies and assemble boxes of treats for those who protect and serve our community (first responders, hospital employees, etc.). We'll need a few folks to make deliveries of treats, too.
Would you rather spend some time serving outside? There will be a group heading to God's Garden to pick green beans. Wear your sunscreen and take a water bottle!

What a privilege it is to serve in God's world!

Seeing the Underside and Seeing God: Nadia Bolz-Weber with Krista Tippett at the Wild Goose Festival

Several CtK members have let me know they enjoyed hearing NPR's "On Being" this past week. The radio interview featured an ELCA pastor, the Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, who is the founding pastor of a quirky congregation in Denver, House for All Sinners and Saints. Here's the whole, unedited interview, on video, from the Wild Goose Festival this past summer. Enjoy!

Results from the Souper Bowl of Caring

Members and friends of Christ the King collected 593 cans of soup for the Souper Bowl of Caring. Thank You!

Hungry families and individuals in the Greater Gallatin Valley area will benefit from such generosity.

The Super Bowl might be over, but the caring continues!

The New Orleans Saints were victorious last Sunday evening. We have yet to see if we will be victorious here at CtK with our challenge to collect 300 cans of soup during the month of February.
If you haven't brought any soup for the Gallatin Valley Food Bank lately, there's still LOTS OF TIME! Bring a can or two this Sunday and add it to the "canstruction" happening in front of the altar.
Together we can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors struggling with food security!

Prayer Shawl Ministry Begins

We are beginning a Prayer Shawl Ministry here at CtK. The first group gathered this morning at 10:30am and began working on some shawls. Another group will gather this evening at 7pm - ALL are welcome!!
Wondering what Prayer Shawl Ministry is all about? Check out this website.
Don't knit or crochet, but would like to learn? Just show up! There are folks who can get you started.
CtK's prayer shawl knitters and "crochet-ers" will meet on the third Tuesday of each month, at 10:30am and 7pm - come to either or both sessions each month!

Walk a Walk that does more than Talk

Mark Sunday, October 18th 1:45 p.m. on your calendars.

On that day, plan to join fellow advocates who wish to stop local and global hunger by walking the 22nd annual Bozeman CROP Walk.

The CROP Walk will start at the Gallatin County Food Bank, located on 602 Bond Street in Bozeman. The path for the walk will meander through city parks and neighborhoods. The distance walked is equivalent to the distance walked by many hungry people across the globe in search of food for themselves and their families. Imagine walking 10 kilometers every day in search of food.

The proceeds from the walk will be used locally and around the world to alleviate hunger.
Church World Service (CWS) is an ecumenical agency supported by many churches. The Gallatin County Food Bank, Headwaters Area Food Bank, Loaves and Fishes and the Belgrade Ministerial Association have been supported in the past by the area CROP Walk.

Last year’s CROP Walk raised $15,700. Our own Robert Nolan raised $271 through donations. Christ the King sponsored seven walkers last year. I bet we can recruit ten walkers this year.

The funds raised this year will be administered by Church World Service, but 25% will be used to support local hunger relief.

And our local agencies need the support and help! The Gallatin County Food Bank has seen an increase of 30% for food basket requests over last year.

If you are interested in walking on the 2009 Bozeman CROP Walk or making a donation, please contact me, Pastor Grant.

In the meantime, get in shape for the walk that does more than talk about hunger.
