Faith is a living, bold trust in God's grace, so certain of God's favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. Such confidence and knowledge of God's grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to God and all creatures. The Holy Spirit makes this happen through faith. Because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the God who has shown you such grace. - Martin Luther

WEBS - Women's Ecumenical Book Study

There's a great group in Bozeman called WEBS. WEBS is an acronym for "Women's Ecumenical Book/Bible Study." Coming up in February, WEBS will be offering several book study groups, reading different books and meeting at a variety of times and locations.

From the WEBS site online:
The mission of WEBS (Women's Ecumenical Bible Study) is to build connection; as we explore God's story, we share our stories. WEBS offers Seekers and Christians, who enjoy the perspectives of other women, a safe, engaging environment to nurture their faith through Bible Study (for the month of February, a BOOK Study) and in relationship.  WEBS provides both a spiritual and scholarly environment in which each woman can live her own spiritual journey in community.
For the month of February, women will have a choice to explore three different books in small groups.  Feel free to join more than one book group.  We selected the following three books from which to choose because they cover a range of spiritual topics (theology, outreach, spirituality) from a range of perspectives (evangelical/emergent, main-line Protestant, Roman Catholic/contemplative) and invite thoughtful discussion. Books are listed below with a link to their descriptions and group meeting times.

The books for February are What We Talk About When We Talk About God, by Rob Bell; Get Off Your Donkey!: Help Somebody and Help Yourself, by Reggie McNeal; and Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Richard Rohr.

I (Lindean) get to lead a group on the Rob Bell book, Fridays in February from 10:00 - 11:15am at Bozeman United Methodist Church. There will even be free child care available!

For more information, check out the WEBS website, or contact Jen, the WEBS administrator, at admin@websbozeman.org .

Women's Retreat

Getting ready to head home Sunday afternoon
Nine women headed down to Big Sky last weekend for a women's retreat.
The group ate together, prayed together, laughed, cried, learned, read, sang, listened...
Some skied, some knitted, some went for a walk, some wrote in journals...

Overall, it was a wonderful time to grow in faith and friendship together as sisters in Christ. It was also a meaningful and reflective way to spend the first full weekend of the new year, as routines and rhythms interrupted by the holidays gear up again.

Not able to participate this year? The consensus seems to be this should become an annual event - so, next time!!

Making History?

I've been exchanging emails with a mentor and friend this week, who also happens to be our predecessor here at CtK, the Rev. Shelley Wickstrom. Pastor Shelley now works on the ELCA's Region One staff. And she wears quite a few hats. She spent time in June at the Campus Ministry Conference, part of July at the Women of the ELCA's Triennial Convention, and part of August in Orlando for the Churchwide Assembly (CWA). Here's what she had to say about the Assembly:
During CWA I was impressed by the endorsements given to the Genetics Statement. One genetics counselor gave a workshop on it to a national conference of genetics counselors who were amazed at its depth and breadth. That kind of peer review matters. There were also farmers who spoke in favor of it, plus geneticists. Participation in the Malaria Campaign will be one of those experiences that hopefully we'll be able to say to Marit some day that once upon a time there was a disease that killed a child every 45 seconds. Your church stopped that (with the help of philanthropists, other denominations, etc....)

I hope she's right - that Malaria will be history someday. And that we will know we have played a small part in making it so.

Not sure what all Pastor Shelley's talking about? Learn more about the Social Statement on Genetics, the ELCA Malaria Campaign, the Women of the ELCA, and Lutheran Campus Ministry!
See you in worship - don't forget to bring your school bag this Sunday!
